Vibration Meter is an application that allows users to measure vibrations, including seismograph, body tremors, and seismometer readings. The app utilizes the phone's sensors to detect and quantify vibrations, displaying them as seismic data. Users can assess vibrations using both the Richter scale and the modified Mercalli intensity scale.
To calibrate the application, users can simply click on the "Calibrate" button, place their device on a flat surface, and allow the values to stabilize for approximately 20 seconds. Subsequently, they can click "OK" to begin exploring the earthquake data.
The app provides references to earthquake vibrations categorized according to the internationally recognized Mercalli intensity scale for seismic events. This scale, used to measure earthquake intensity, evaluates the impacts of seismic activities. When utilized for seismic measurements, Vibration Meter can also be referred to as a seismograph or seismometer.
Mercalli Intensity Scale:
- Instrumental - Not felt, only recorded by seismographs.
- Weak - Sensed on top floors of tall buildings.
- Slight - Felt indoors, akin to a passing light truck.
- Moderate - Rattling windows and doors, similar to a passing train.
- Rather Strong - Noticed by all; minor objects disturbed.
- Strong - Books falling off shelves, trees shaking, causing damage.
- Very Strong - Difficult to stand; buildings sustain damage.
- Destructive - Significant damage, trees uprooted.
- Violent - General panic ensues; major damage with visible cracks.
- Intense - Most buildings destroyed; rails bent.
- Extreme - Severe rail deformations; pipelines destroyed.
- Catastrophic - Near-total destruction observed.
While some countries rely on the Richter scale for seismic evaluation instead of the Mercalli scale, it is important to note that the Richter scale is a logarithmic scale used to define earthquake magnitude based on seismic wave amplitudes. It measures magnitudes as logarithms of wave amplitude ratios against arbitrary minor amplitudes.
